  1. Anybody else agree that this was the most boring bike race they have ever seen? Why was it called the Tour of Britain when it was all in the English Midlands apart from a wee jaunt into Wales (which was the only bit worth watching)
  2. Skipper of a fishing boat for 35 years. I sold up in 2007 and thought my working life was over. You would think after being a fishermen all your life there would not be too many options for a 50 year old cripple. Not so, if your keen you can turn your hand to almost anything. Somebody mentioned Air traffic control, I did that but for ships, they may move slower but moving 60-70 ships a shift in a small harbour takes a fair bit of organising. After 4 years of that I became a marine scientist, after 5 years of that I started working on wind farms. I'm well into my 60's and never been busier. Go for it. Never look back, look forward.
  3. Cheers, one of my favourite bars in London is the Blackfriars. Reckon the Albion must be pretty close that will do nicely.
  4. As the title says, does anyone know a good boozer to watch tonight’s game? Covent Garden area preferably but not essential ... cheers
  5. Take a 2 hr train journey from Nuremberg to Frankfurt and jump on the 11:00 Lufthansa flight to Edinburgh. Take a tram to Waverley and another train to Berwick. You will be home for 5 pm
  6. Stayed at an Ibis at Canary Wharf on a Saturday night a couple of weeks ago. £60 for a basic double room. Good links to the centre via the Docklands railway with a station just across the road. If you get off at Tower Bridge you can get a tube to almost anywhere in the city from there. Canary Wharf is decent at night. In June the bars with outside seating around the Wharf will be busy. Had a superb fish and chips in the Tea Merchant. Not as expensive as central London either.
  7. Albanach, You put up a great post of places to visit in Copenhagen but I'd tell folk not to bother with McJoys. Its got the most obnoxious bar staff I've ever come across.Tripadvisor is full of people with similar experiences to mine. I went in the other day, it was busy but not mobbed. Hardly anyone drinking. Just folk sitting hogging tables chatting. I stood at the bar for about 15/20 minutes waiting to get served, the barman never came near me - even when I was the only person standing at the bar. Gave up and left. Went back the next day against my better judgement as there was game on I wanted to see. Gave up again after 32 minutes of standing waiting at the bar. (32 minutes had been played of the game) The barman made eye contact a couple of times but just ignored us again. Mcjoys calling itself a Scottish pub is an embarrassment to Scotland. It was the only negative during an otherwise great weekend away
  8. Thought the last leg was superb. I loved it when Johnny Vegas made an appearance on a few of the shows. Found the Para's inspiring but have to say I think the disability categories need a bit of tightening up. e.g. The guy that won the category 3 cycling road race won it with an average speed of nearly 30mph. That's not far off Pro standards. He was miles ahead of anyone else. I believe he has a problem with the arches of his feet but competes against paracyclists with no legs. Something not right there. Got a wee bit fed up of the hype surrounding Sarah Storey. Fair enough she has a deformed hand but does that really compromise her ability to cycle ? I'd prefer to see the people who's disability actually affects their ability to perform in their chosen sport given the chance of competing against others with similar disabilities Otherwise the medals table,in my opinion, becomes meaningless.
  9. Do you no think that all increasing the price of alcohol will do is push more folk into taking drugs? You can spend a tenner and buy a few bottles of Cider that will have you bouncing off the walls all night - or a pill that will do the same. Increasing the price of drink might make some folk (that would normally buy drink) try the drugs instead when their short of cash.
  10. Going here for the New Year. Cheers for the info lads. Reckon Charlie Stotts will be the place for me ⚓️?
  11. Nae long back fae climbing Ventoux a few days before the tour came through. The fans seem to have come in for a lot of stick after the Froome incident and quite rightly so, but in my opinion the French authorities have to shoulder some of the blame for what happened. There were heaps of fans with tents and motorhomes all the way up past Chalet Reynard to the weather station days and days before the tour came up. After it was announced that the stage would end at Chalet Reynard all these folk had to come off the mountain and make their way down to the forest which was already bursting at the seems with fans. Although the decision was made 2 days beforehand very little additional fencing was put up to hold everyone back, it was all left up the mountain where it wasn't needed. It was inevitable that chaos and carnage would result.
  12. Been a season ticket holder since the 80's. Seen good times and bad. United's always been a club that survived on selling players but I've never seen us sell so many of our biggest assets in such a short space of time. Its almost been like a fire sale. I never renewed this year.
  13. A lad I know works for the BBC. He was involved in a TV debate Jim Murphy was taking part in. He said he (Jim Murphy) was never off his mobile phone texting someone out of camera shot beneath his desk. A couple of times he was asked a question and he didn't even know what he had been asked so just started spouting things irrelevant to the question asked. Some of you may remember, it was with Nicola Sturgeon. She was shaking her head at him while he was mouthing off. She knew what he had been doing. Not good.
  14. Heidelberg is a bonny wee toon. Stayed here quite a number of times. If you get the chance go to Rothenburg. Its no far and like something out of a fairytale.
  15. Was there in the summer. To be honest I wasnt too impressed. Lot of the city is very run down with many shops etc boarded up due to the economic situation. If its ancient history your after maybe Rome would be an idea?
