How do you know what they would have said if they were asked to join the squad?

Ridiculous. Total daft Scottish attitude looking for a fight where there's none to be had. Sometimes the word 'Scottish' is a complete beemur if that's the sort of nonsense that's associated with it.

or alternatively they've mouthed the necessary platitudes in order to keep their club fanbase on side until a decision has to be made

He's been nothing more than a decent player who has been elevated by the media into a so-called great player.
He played for Man Utd, Real and Milan. I think that makes him a bit more than decent.

Sounds to me like Bannan and S Fletcher, in particular, had put themselves forward to play but weren't deemed good enough by Pearce for the final squad.

So what is the feckin squad? has it been published yet? have they started training yet? the whole thing seems a very badly managed, and too leave out Beckham is a joke. Thousands of kids would have loved to see him, and thousands of pounds have been lost in shirt sales too. its a disgrace the way its been managed from start to finish! never mind what nationality we are within Britain.
I wouldn't say it's a joke. It's not a major international tournament and the way the media are banging on about it is as though a member of the royal family has been assasinated. He had no god-given right to play for Team GB, a team which won't be competing at any future Olympic Games. I said on the BBC comments page that the real tragedy was that Hodgson left Micah Richards out of his England squad (he'd have been backup for Glen Johnson with that Spurs defender injured) which has led to his inclusion in the Olympic team. I hope they get pumped anyway.
